I got the long weekend started right with the Oñate Lady Knights hosting the Carlsbad Cavegirls on Friday, January 14th.
Both teams are on the rise, and I would be surprised if they didn’t progress deep into the tournament this year.
It’s great to see the Lady Knights find some success, and no doubt new coach Ben Trujillo has something to do with it. Not particularly big, the Knights are fast and deadly accurate from three point range. Jackie Lopez, Josie Morales, Kelsie Niefhoff and Alexyss Burkhartsmier were all on fire; very fun to watch.
Carlsbad, led by Taylor Edmondson, has some size and looked equally as hot from the beyond the arc. The Cavegirls were a little too much for Oñate, winning 61-54.
In the past I’ve carried along my 70-200 f/2.8 and 24-70 f/2.8 thinking they’d be useful for fast indoor action, but I’ve since resigned myself to leaving them at home. Comparing them to the primes I use (35mm, 85mm, 135mm and 300mm) the zooms, while more convenient, don’t have the speed or quality I’m looking for.
Photographically, every gym has its own set of challenges, and at Oñate the biggest problems are the orange bleachers and the green color cast given off by the tungsten lighting; not the best color combination.
