Saturday, December 7, 2013 saw a historic day in the annals of Las Cruces prep sports, as the Las Cruces Bulldawgs hosted the Mayfield Trojans for what would be the 50th meeting in their long-standing rivalry–it also happened to be the 2013 5A state championship game.

Over 27,000 fans braved the wind and bitter cold to witness the latest chapter in one of the most popular high school rivalries in the nation. Many had thought the Bulldawgs would run over the Trojans, much like they had their Albuquerque-based opponents, (especially with their loss to the Trojans a month earlier), but Mayfield had other plans.

I tend to cover the Las Cruces High population a little more than the other schools (full disclosure: I’m a Bulldawg), but I’m happy to see both teams make it the finals–you couldn’t have asked for a better game, and it really brings the community together.

I’m already looking forward to next season.
