Mixing it up

Just when I thought things would die down, a whole bunch of new opportunities presented themselves. Last weekend I shot the Mesilla Valley Christian Schools’ Social.

Sound of Music

On Thursday, I attended the opening night of The Mesilla Valley Christian Schools’ drama club performance of  “The Sound of Music”. With the exception of “Maria’s” wedding veil coming off during the ceremony, the play went off without a hitch.

The quality of the light on the stage at the Rio Grande Theatre was is very nice, so there was no need to drag along my fast primes. For most of the shots, I was in the range of 1/160 second @ f/ 4.5 on my 70-200 mm. I also took my 300mm for close-ups, and it was the perfect focal range from the back of the theatre.

Prep Baseball: Oñate vs Valley

On Friday afternoon I braved the heat to catch the Oñate/Valley baseball game at Apodaca Park. This was the second game in the series and the Knights pulled out a win to advance to the next round of the 5A state tournament.

Baseball is the sport I have the least amount of experience with, so shooting the NMSU baseball team has really helped me learn and appreciate the game much more.

Change of pace

Since I’ve been focusing on the Big Time Hoops site and the girl’s side of basketball, I haven’t had a chance to catch a lot of the MVCS boys games. The move of the (somewhat) traditional MVCS Saturday games has thrown me for a loop as well, so I was disappointed when I missed their homecoming game last week.

Zack Adams flies to the hoop.

It’s always fun to watch these guys play, and since this is the third year I’ve been following coach Adler and his squad, I’ve had the opportunity to see the younger players develop, namely Zack Adams and Tommy Adler.

Both were instrumental in the ’07 state championship run and no doubt the team will look to Zack and Tommy for their leadership this year.

Zack, pictured to the left, is one of the local athletes that makes my job easy–his athleticism and presence on the court makes him a great subject to capture (Cruces’ Zoe Meade comes to mind, too). He also showed up on my last post about my “Top 10” action shots from 2008.

Tommy and Zack, like the rest of the team, are a great bunch of guys; true gentlemen and genuinely nice people.

Now we just need to talk about the mohawk…
