2011 Sundancer Tryouts

I’ve had a lot of good fortune in getting to photograph this great group of dancers, and although my attendance was cut short by another gig, I always walk away with a renewed appreciation of how much work it is to go through the tryouts (from a dancer’s perspective) and how much work it is to organize the tryouts (from the coach’s perspective.)

Lucinda, who took back the coaching duties after a year off, had everything running like a well oiled machine. A former Sundancer, she is super-organized and I like to have her around when I’m photographing the group; she’s great with direction and knows exactly what she wants–she makes my job easy!

I’m not sure of who made the squad as of this writing, so here a some of my favorite shots in the short time I had with the group.

NMSU Pajama Party

I attended my first men’s basketball game on Wednesday, March 2 (the first in a very long time), for the Aggie’s big game against the Utah State Aggies. The game was moved back to a 9:00 PM start to accommodate the ESPN2 broadcast of the event, and declared a “Pajama Party.”

A new student group, “The PanAmmuntion,” dedicated to get student interest in to what it was back in the early ’90s, did a successful job in getting the students out to the game; both sections behind the baskets were packed with rowdy students. My favorite part of the night was when Pistol Pete crowd surfed from the floor to the top of the lower level and back on the hands of the students–I never saw that in the ’90s!
