Cruces; Oñate advance to next round

Mando Marshall goes up for the slam

The 2011 basketball season ended for me after the high-flying Las Cruces Bulldawgs and equally explosive Oñate Knights both advanced to the Elite 8 in the New Mexico basketball tournament.

Las Cruces, the #6 seed, played a tough Highlands team and lost an 11 point lead, narrowly coming out ahead by two, 52-50. The highlights of the game for me were the three dunks Mando Marshall had off the fast break. The shots would have been much better if I had been positioned on the other side of the court, but the glare from the light coming in through the north-west side of the gym would have ruined the shot from the floor.

Oñate, the #1 seed didn’t skip a beat against #16 Hobbs. The Knights had a comfortable lead for much of the game, finishing 61-51. As always, there was alot of excitement and hang time to be found, much of it courtesy of Tim Jacobs and Terell De Rouen.

Good luck to both teams, as they progress to the next round of the state tournament.

3-5A Boys Tourney Championship

I had a late start to the Oñate v. Las Cruces District 3-5A championship game. With hallway to the gym jam-packed with people and the police/school administration turning people back at the gate, I didn’t make it into the gym until late in the second quarter.

In addition to my late arrival, the game was such a low-scoring affair, there weren’t as many photo opportunities as there were in the last match up between these two teams. Regardless, the bursts of action from the Oñate team, especially Tim Jacobs and Terrel De Rouen, made the game interesting to shoot.

I really enjoyed the energy on both sides of the gym, especially when the Las Cruces “Super Fan” started leading the student section in cheers.

Congrats to Oñate for the big win, and earning the #1 seed in 5A in 2011 NM State Tournament. I expect both Cruces and Oñate to progress deep into the tourney and represent the Las Cruces area well.
